Personal Leave


Personal leave allows employees flexibility in taking time off for vacations, family needs, illness, and any other reason you need to be away from work.  Personal leave combines vacation, sick and holiday leave into one leave pot – employees earn personal leave every two weeks, and, with advance notice or in case of emergency, leave earned may be taken in increments as small as a half-hour.  In addition, personal leave has the following features:

  • Employees may carry over up to 10 days each year, until they reach a maximum leave balance of 100 days.
  • Employees are paid for their personal leave when they leave employment "at the rate they are paid when they leave".
  • Employees can sell up to 60 days of personal leave at a reduced rate at any time, as long as they maintain a balance of 30 days.
  • Employees may donate leave to employees who have suffered a medical or family emergency. This includes leave above the maximum carry over rate that would otherwise be lost.

The City offers nine paid holidays that are factored into the leave accrual rate, those holidays are:

  • New Year's Day
  • Martin Luther King Birthday
  • Good Friday
  • Memorial Day
  • July 4th
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Day after Thanksgiving
  • Christmas Day

Leave accrual rates for regular employees are:
